Spring Cleaning Your Lawn
We know life can get busy and get in the way of your yard cleanup and maintenance. But if you’re not consistent and neglect cleaning up your yard for too long, your lawn and landscaping can become unhealthy. An unkempt yard can also decrease your home’s curb appeal or make a business look uninviting. Professional yard cleanup services can keep your lawn looking healthy so that it can grow and thrive year-round.
What Does Spring Cleaning Involve?
Spring cleanup service involves numerous aspects such as:
- Clearing away leaves, branches, and clutter
- Hauling away and composting debris
- Mowing the grass
- Re-edging and cleaning garden and flower beds
- Redefining the borders of the lawn
- Reseed damaged areas of the lawn
- Pruning and trimming trees and shrubs
In this first category of spring yard cleanup tasks, you will be picking up after Old Man Winter and any messy neighbors. Roll up your sleeves and start removing litter, dog feces, dead grass, leaves, pinecones, and debris on lawns. Next head to your gardens and remove dead leaves and stalks on perennials. Wear some heavy work gloves for this task, especially litter that may contain broken glass. Tackle the unpleasant task of dog waste disposal. Don’t compost dog or cat feces; they contain pathogens. Consider taking action to help keep other people’s dogs from defecating on your property by researching dog repellents.
Spring cleanup in the perennial bed begins with removing any dead leaves and stalks from perennials and ornamental grasses that you didn’t remove in fall. First is lawn care. If you raked leaves thoroughly in the fall, you’ve probably avoided the fungal disease known as snow mold. Inevitably, there will still be some stray leaves to rake and raking helps control thatch build-up on lawns. While you’re raking the lawn, you’ll also want to remove pinecones or limbs. Pinecones don’t break down easily in a compost bin unless they are first shredded.
In the Northern United States, you can start new lawns in spring or overseed an established lawn However, if you will be applying a reemerging herbicide in spring to control crabgrass in an existing lawn, it is better to overseed in the fall.
When to Mow
Wait until temperatures have been consistently reaching at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Trying to cut grass that hasn’t fully thawed from its winter nap can damage the tender blades. Make sure your grass is dry. Determine that your grass has reached the proper height. The optimum height of the cool-season grasses we have in New Jersey is generally about 2”-2.5”. But remember, that’s post-cutting height. When you mow you should take off no more than one-third of the height of the grass, so your pre-cutting measurement should be about 3”-3.75” for most cool-season grasses.
No one wants to take a tape measure out every time they go to mow the lawn. Here’s a tip for setting your lawnmower height: Set the height of your blade and leave it there. Mark the wheel of your lawnmower with a line for your minimum pre-cutting. Then draw an arrow to it so you can tell which way is “up” when the wheels rotate. When the grass grows tall enough to meet the line, it’s time to cut.
