Planting Christmas Trees

Advise your residential customers who want to plant their Christmas Tree after the holiday season to dig a large hole in September or October and fill it with autumn leaves. Winter ground is too hard to dig. The hole should not be deeper than the root ball. In January when they want to move the tree from the warm house to the yard, the hole is already dug, and the leaves just need to be scooped out.  Remember to cut the bottom of the burlap that is covering the roots so that the roots grow in spring.  Roll the tree into the hole and fill in the gaps with loose earth.   Having a couple bags of loose soil in the shed will prevent any digging until spring. Expect some pine needle loss and browning during the first winter due to the climate change from the house to the outdoors.  The tree will grow happily in spring and turn evergreen.
